Tough road to walk..surgery or meds?

Aug 04, 2015 1:05 PM

This just came across my mind and I have difficulty I making up my mind when I got asked this.

The question is quite simple, given the scenario where pain is minimal, say pain intensity is between 1 and 4 with not so high dosage of narcotic meds, would you try a bigger surgery like fusion in your spine which could fix everything or make it much worse. Which would you choose?

After my previous surgery, I'm not sure whether I felt better than I was. I probably feel worse from my knowledge. Maybe I'm just on a good mix of my meds now where pain is lingering at 5 or lower. maybe coming out of my flare up which hit 9 last couple of days, but thinking if it's the right mix of meds, should I even consider surgery? Meds can affect me in the long run, but those of us who has lived our life in severe and unbearable pain, we get scared about changes in meds and whatever might make our situation worse when it is already so bad.

Im very interested in what you all have to say considering the meds obviously affects you later in life.

Octobot, my average pain started at 4-5. Some days it's lower and sometimes higher. I don't know if it's be willing to do surgery if there's only a 50/50 chance of improvement. That's just me. I'll be praying for you to make the decision that's best for you and that it will work at a 90% or better success rate! 🙏🌼

I've read somewhere that 60% found some relief, 30% says not much difference, 10% said it was much worse. Weighing it in favour of doing the surgery. But 40% of uncertainty really scares me. I've spoken to a lot of people whom had done some major surgery and almost all advised me not to.

My doctor definitely won't allow me to continue with meds due to my age. I think they will force me to do the surgery and if I don't, they may refuse to treat me. There's only 2 local doctors here and about 3 locam doctors whom are here contracted for a few months then they leave for good.

Have you gotten a second opinion? Do research and are what different types of surgery might be available, and if it's in your area. Whatever your choice, I'll pray for success! 🙏🌼

My area doesn't have MRIs or one specialist. I need to fly approximately 1500+ miles to get to the mainland/capital city to have such services. I fly 5000+ miles to see my pain specialists because I heard they were good. Last time I went, I spent well over $10k AUD for flight accommodation and food. That's how desperate I am to get better.

My current specialist is my third, last two was like lets just put you under the knife if you are feeling so bad. They didn't even bother trying anything and they just want to go straight to surgery just because I said I was in so much pain.
