Trying to sleep

Last night I was trying to sleep, but no matter what position I was in the pain was unbearable. I ended up sleeping sitting up with a pillow behind my head and back. How do you sleep when your body sends painsignals canceling your attempts? How do you sleep when you too exhausted to?

Personally I am prescribed both marijuana and Trazadone for my sleep. It seems to at least put me out! Have you talked to your doc?

I dread sleep.. My thing is the pain meds help during the day and I am able to get to sleep at night but I wake during the night with paralyzingly pain of Costcochrronditis if I move or not. Then in the am I'm too tired to get up and am in terrible discomfort or pain.

If I'm hurting before bed, say with leg cramps & muscle spasms, I take a muscle relaxer and Tramadol, then massage my leg muscles with Voltaren. Its not perfect but it helps some. I drink a relaxing hot tea with honey too. Some nights are better than others. Some nights I'm on a wedge pillow or in the recliner. I have noticed if I lay or sit up in bed mor than an hour before I plan to sleep, its harder because the bed doesn't support as well and it causes more pain.

I have not been able to sleep in my bed for the last 7-8 years. The pain of laying down, especially with the mattress I had, caused such pressure points and also, each time i moved, the horrible pain woke me. I sleep on a recliner and just ordered a custom made recliner to hopefully help me get a decent night's sleep. I take Temazapam for bed and I can take a second one as needed. Usually, I just take the two in the beginning and pray I'll sleep. I hope you find some resolution and get your good night's sleep you need.... Good Luck!!

Hmm thanks you guys~ I have been skipping on my daily meds (cause I keep forgetting before class at 7:30am) so my pain has been really bad! I tried taking sleeping pills and painkillers before I sleep and last night was a bit better~ I think I'm going to talk to my doc about it because the lack of sleep doesn't help my ME/CFS...

I take my 225mg of Amateyptaline about 30 minutes before bed and it helps me GET to sleep. I used to try for 3 hours before nodding off.

I do a relaxation exercise. It's called progressive muscle relaxation by Jacobsen (maybe I got the name wrong). I am sure you will find a youtube video which shows how it works.

The only thing that I've found that works for me on a painful night is 1 Benadryl(25 mg) about 60 minutes before bed. Either that or 2 Advil pm 60 min before bed.

Lots of great suggestions on this question, but the most important one, in my opinion, is that you should talk to your doctor as there could be some underlying issues other than your pain that is causing the insomnia.

One non prescription medication that works for me on occasion is Gravol (motion sickness medication). I even found using a half a pill works and a full one works better but does leave me with a bit of a medication hangover. Probably from combining the Gravol with all the other medications I am on. Make sure you talk to your pharmacist about adding any medication to the ones you are already on.

If you have difficulty falling asleep, make sure you take the medications an hour before bed.

I found that biofeedback can be useful for this to. I don't know if you have ever tried it. If you can achieve the goal, it will help you temporarily with the pain making it easier to sleep and will cause you to have deep relaxation. You have to start of knowing that just like the mind controls us physically at times in a negative way, like if we believe that we may have caught a stomach bug that is going around. We may in fact not got in but we can convince ourselves that we have it and subconsciously cause physical symptoms like nausea and vomiting.

So if our mind can influence our brain to control us physically, we need to believe that the Opposite can take place. That we can control our brains to cause positive physical reactions. But instead of this being subconscious, this will be a conscious act. So the first part is realizing for this exercise, we are controlling the brain.

In our mind, picture the place that represents the most pleasant and beautiful place on earth that you would like to be at. Close your eyes while you are doing this. Hopefully you have picked someplace you have been. Now use your mind to experience the full joy of it. Picture the time of year. Smell the air as you remember it was or as you would want it to be. If you have tasted foods there or if you are going to make a meal there, taste it, taste some of your favorite things. Put someone in your place that you would like to be with you if you want. Next, if you would like to add a swing or something enjoyable, you can add that. We don't want to clutter the picture. Now once this is done, take a snapshot. This will be the image you will constantly think of while you are doing the following

Start with your feet. Tell your brain to make them warm. As you think of that picture, feel your feet warm up and relax at the same time. Don't try to advance any further. Just work on the feet. When they feel nice and warm, go from your feet to your knees, tell your brain to warm them up, think of your picture as you feel your lower legs warm up and relax at the same time. As we move up, don't be surprised if you start not feeling previous areas that we warmed up. The brain has put that area to sleep. So you got the idea. Next go from the knees to your stomach. Then do half your stomach. Then do the other half. Then do each arm seperately, then the neck, then the eyes.

Never proceed unless the area you are doing is warm to you. It may not be warm to touch but from the brains perspective and the way you think you are feeling, it will feel warm. I hope this helps you sleep. This is sort of like getting the results of a massage without all the feel good touching. It accomplishes a deep relaxation if you are able to do this. I am confident you can if you want to try it.

I am sorry to post it if you don't like it. It just helped me. I don't sleep for days because of pain. But when it happens, I don't desire to. I don't even feel tired. But when I feel slightly tired, I will try this. I

I've found my pain to be so bad that I'm up for 3 days straight, to where my pain meds and muscle relaxers don't work, on those times I use my heating pad and ice pack's, then when I am finally tired enough to fall asleep my legs start jumping and wake me right back up,so I toss n turn for another 2 hours or until my legs stop jumping before I finally fall asleep.

I can't sleep tonight. I'm too tense from the pain. I have to be up in 6 hrs for work...I've taken all I can in meds but nothing is helping.

Blessed your heart Sweetiepie! Do you take anything to help you sleep? I still have occasional nights of insomnia due to flare ups. But my psych doc kept doing blood levels for my brain serotonin, which kept being too low. Since he finally increased my antidepressant enough to raise my brain serotonin I'm sleeping better most nights. OTC melatonin is OK for some nights. I bought the lowest does available (3mg) and sometimes break it in half. But when I use it I make sure to go to bed an hour earlier so I get enough sleep to avoid the fuzzy hangover. If not it takes a whole pot of strong coffee to help me wake fully. Good luck and may God bless you with improved sleep & less pain! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

I take muscle relaxers and kolopin to help me sleep. And I'd course a pain meds to top it off. Usually knocks me out cold. Til morning, then I try and move and it starts all over again.

I've been trying to get diagnosed with either chronic fatigue or fibromyala, I have symptoms for both.I have found it hard to get to sleep and when I do dose off its time to get up and I feel shattered.Then my wife noticed I stopped breathing at times and she nudged me.I got referred to a sleep clinic and diagnosed with anapia,They issued me with a machine to force air into my airways at night via a mask.Reason is with anapia you don't go into a deep sleep.You may snore and then stop breathing only for you to gasp and breath again so waking,but you don't remember that.It has helped me sleep through and do wake refreshed most mornings but tiredness kicks in during day along with pain,so I'm going back to docs to hopefully diagnose me.Signs of anapia are snoring with a large snort now and again,shallow breathing.tired and falling asleep often when talking to someone,watching TV or reading .Also if you have a 16 inch coller you may be prone to it.The sleep clinic said it won't stop insomnia though.

What antidepressants do you all take? I'm on Cymbalta and don't think its helping any more. In addition, its caused weight gain. Allergic to Lyrica...tried Savella and Elavil. Not sure what to ask for now.

LauraV, I was on cymbalta nine months but started having aggression, worse depression and wishing to die. I've had major side effects to all the newer meds for depression so I was put on nortriptyline/Pamelor, something I used in the early 90's that works well for me. I have a genetic defect that keeps me from properly metabolizing most meds, especially antidepressants and pain meds. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

I take a sleep med called Alteril . It's all natural and has melatonin and tryptophan in it. I take it about an hour before I want to sleep and so far, it's the only thing that helps. I used to take benadryl as well. But the combination brings on the arm twitching, so I stopped the benadryl. Good luck. Hope you find something that works for you.

I have started drinking hot Sleepy time tea with honey before bed. It has no caffeine in it, Egyptian Chamomile, Cool Spearmit,and Lemongrass. I have not had to get up during the night for the last two nights. I don't know if it's the tea or I just had two nights where I was able to sleep thru the night. I am out of Melatonin right now but I have to take 11 mg. Hope every one has a beautiful and as pain free day as possible.

Weezie, I use to drink solely time tea and loved it. I'm now allergic to lemongrass. Almost all my herbal teas I liked have lemongrass. So NOT fun! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Flappy I am so sorry to hear about your additional conditions and difficulties with meds. I have tried others and they didn't help or had reaction to them. Trying to reduce my dosage and see if that makes any difference. Leo ive,never heard of baclofen. Adding it to list to discuss with doc. I responded well to Wellbutrin a few yrs ago but it doesn't help fibro I rhink it only helps with mental health.

I found out by researching that if you have fibromyalgia, sjogrens, hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism, lupus or other autoimmune diseases, you have a greater chance of developing others. And they all share common symptoms, which makes it difficult to know which flare is occurring. I think others with multiple issues feel the same.

I'm on nothing for my fibro pain, since they took me off the cymbalta (bad side effects) & stopped the gabapentin until my tremors are diagnosed. So I hurt all day every day at a 3-4 level. When I overdo it or something flares it's very hard. But the Plaquenil I've been on (sjogrens) about 2 months has decreased even my daily pain; use to be 4-6. Being able to sleep better has reduced it and my edgy/moody/aggressive behavior. I'm praying everyone on here can get the right docs & right treatments so you all have less pain and better sleep! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

I have Fibro, depression, panic attacks, anxiety disorder. I've been struggling with insomnia for about four or five months now. At first it was once in awhile, a couple times per month. Lately it's been every day. Some nights I'm up till 2-3 am. Most nights I'm up till 5-6 am. Lately I've been up till 8 am and I'm just exhausted. I've tried Melatonin, then Z Quill, finally I tried Benadryl aa my pharmacist suggested. Nothing is working. I'm seeing my doctor soon, in the meantime I will try Sleepy Time tea or Alteril. Anything to help me fall asleep before midnight.

Maybe you have sleep apnea? I was like this for many years till recently after a sleep study, I've been suffering from sleep apnea, basically subconsciously waking up to gasp for air. Should ask to be referred to a sleep disorder specialist. Helped me a lot to understand and now using a cpap machine which has been working out great for me.

Sleep?? What's that????? I feel tired and severely fatigued all of the time. Dealing with everything that I'm going through plus dealing with my family and my hustands Multiple Sclerosis, I just feel like I can't keep going. I stay in soooo much pain and yet my family doesn't help me out at all except for my husband and bless his heart it's all he can do to take care of some of his little things he does. I'm just in a very depressed place in my life right now and don't know what to do anymore.

Irishgirl6968, It's when I get to where you are that I step back and look at what must be done & what can I let slide. Then I take several relaxing breaths and go forward one minute, hour, day at a time. I refuse to let myself worry about what I need to do in the tomorrow's, because usually that's what puts me where you are to start with.

I'm sorry your depression is so hard right now. Have you spoken with your doctor about it? It's possible they need to increase it. Mine has to be increased 2 times until my serotonin levels were level. I didn't know it then, but serotonin levels affect pain levels (receptors).

If you need to, just let it out here, where you're surrounded by a supportive, carrying, living group of people. You are in my thoughts & prayers! And a gentle 🐻 hug to help you through today... One step at a time. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Thank you so much Flappyslady81, that means alot. You and one other person here are the only ones that have responded to anything I write. My prayers are with everyone here. My Dr. Increased my medicine for depression. Today my husband and I celebrate our 28th wedding anniversary but we both feel so down, in pain and depressed to even go do anything. Looking back at last year around this time I would never have imagined my husband having MS. It's just crazy!!! Anyway I'm sorry I'm rambling, I still haven't slept yet. Been in so much pain and have way to much on my mind. The only thing that gets me through each day is prayers to God. Have a wonderful and blessed day.

29th of October for me so I will join your club 😎 Apnea can happen to anyone. I was boarder line so I got it and it helps me rest because of the white noise. It also has a humidifier that helps me stay well. Also there are a couple studies about my condition Crps that we never get to Rem as part of it. I don't know if yours is the same tho. IRISHGIRL I am really new and I've seen you. Look under the tab of your conversations maybe there are more? I can't imagine this group not reaching back to you. Hugs if felt isolated from here.

Thank you everyone, I've been in the worst possible pain, on the 6th you all knew it was our 28th wedding anniversary, we went to go out to dinner and as we were going we were in a car accident, a guy was speeding and riding my tail and he slammed in the back of us and pushed us into another car so we were sandwiched in between 2 cars. Thankfully everyone involved was okay and their cars were fine, our car took on minimal amount of damage in the back and my husband and I were in so much pain from severe headaches to pain in our neck, chest, shoulders and down our back. We had our seat belts on and we definitely had an angel with us that night. I want to say a happy Belated Birthday to you Flappyslady81, and a very Happy and Blessed Anniversary to you and your husband today, may you continue to be blessed and may God watch over you both. Happy Anniversary. Prayers said for many, many more wonderful years together. Thank you for always being there for everyone on here. We love you. ☺

I use a wedge under my kness and I have actually 8 pillows stacked to help me stay propped up as I sleep. So I sleep in a similar reclined position

Happy belated birthday and anniversaries! Irishgirl, I hope you're doing better after your accident.

I have insomnia too. I've tried every herbal combinations out there, prescription sleep aids, over the counter sleep aids, xanax, benadryl, you name it, I've tried it. Look at the time I am writing this. I'm very new to the group. Today is actually the frost day that I've spent time on here and I think I've found something that will help me through all this pain, depression, and anxiety. Reading what you all write to each other gives me hope. Noone understands my pain or my depression. I feel like I should talk about it with my family but they just don't understand. When I've had a bad day of depression or pain I feel like I need to tell them I'm in pain or down so I can excuse the fact that I've done nothing but stay in my head all day long and have gotten nothing accomplished. It's a scapegoat and they get tired of hearing me complain. But yet im sire they are thinking im lazy. It falls on deaf ears as they say.
I think I need to talk to my doctor again about trying something else for sleep-....maybe there is something out there that I haven't tried.

Hi I'm new. I have insomnia as well due to PTSD and the resulting psychosomatic pain.

Currently, I'm going the cheep rice-pack route and it helps with the pain to an extent, but not too much with the insomnia because in my case it's there whether I'm experiencing a lot of pain or not

I have chronic insomnia and sleepwalk when I get too fatigued. I do really complex tasks when I sleep walk like bake or eat. One night I woke up to a burning in my mouth and found myself standing at my kitchen counter with a coffee mug of bleach in front of me. I can't take any of the prescription sleep aids because I sleep walk on them every time I take them. Currently I take melatonin and Remeron and it usually works. The biggest thing for me is to not get too upset when I can't sleep because then I am awake for sure. Has anyone tried CBD oil? I started using it about a month ago and it helps with the pain and anxiety. I hate feeling high and live in a state where medical marijuana is illegal so the CBD oil is a good alternative for me. Welcome to our community Arvid! I'm sorry you have insomnia, PTSD & pain. You will find nothing but support here. No judgements. We are a diverse group but we all suffer from chronic pain. We understand when no one else does, not even the doctors. You can rant, cry, share advice and experiences, out share a laugh or two.

I was on Ambien for 9 years and was having insomnia anyway. My psych doc tripled my antidepressant to get my serotonin level and now I sleep better. I still have broken sleep every night, and occasionally insomnia. When I do, I take melatonin and most of the time it helps. I have Sjogrens and I'm on Plaquenil, which helps with the fibromyalgia pain. I also have Tramadol for break through pain/flare ups. I use a muscle relaxer, usually for night leg cramps/spasms. Have you got a primary care doctor, pain specialist or psych doc? All my docs work together, which is important. I wish you walk, and will added you to my prayers. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Sleep...what is sleep? Hubby and I don't share a bed and haven't for 10+ years as I'm like a jumping bean in bed. It's horrible. I work as a night shift 7 to 730 am as a RN in the ER. It's the only time I feel normal and pain free as I'm not thinking about the pain or sleep.

My pain is way high and it's raised my anxiety and it just hurts no matter where I put myself. Oh well.... I'll maybe get lucky and get a nap later. I have a doctor, but I'm in another state going to school right now, so I started seeing one of the doctors at my student health centre when my pain started getting bad enough to interfere with school. He hasn't been much help unfortunately, so I'm probably going to wait it out and see my doctor again when I go home for the summer.

At this point, I think my original diagnosis of psychosomatic pain may actually be wrong. I've been tested and know it's not arthritis or lupis, and I hate to think it's fibromyalgia, but it's very possible.

Depending on the pain, I rotate between marijuana, phergan (antihistamine that makes me drowsy) , Mersyndol. I do make sure that I do try and have a couple of nights where I dont take anything and just try and use either a hot water bottle or icepack. On those nights, if I can sleep I try not to stress. Eventually my body will sleep. I also take it easy the next day. Having said that, I know that your pain and sleep patterns may be on a different scale to mine and these might not help at all. I have a broken back and other chronic pain issues. I have meds that makes me sleep but I wake up often. I can't always get back to sleep either.
I watch TV in my bedroom when I'm stuck in bed with pain which is often.

I find taking amitriptyline 2 hrs b4 sleep with Oxycontin helps..but I hardly ever sleep right thru the night so never get to feel replenished. Sometime a 20min soak in 2 mug fulls of Epsom salts b4 bed also can help.

I wish I could take a bath but can no longer get down into the tub. If I did, I'd have to call the fire dept to get me out and since I know all the firemen in my district the last thing I need is for them to see me naked... I don't get enough on disability to pay for all of them to have therapy... LOL!!! πŸ™„πŸ˜³πŸ˜œ

I would really love to find out what's going on with my legs. I do have 4 prolapsed discs in my back but the dr tells me they aren't bad enough to effect my legs. Did a EMG and I have mild neuropathy in my lower legs but nothing in my upper. They go numb every once and while. My legs fall asleep alot and it's hard to walk at times and now I have morning tremors but still no answers.

O m g! Hes soooooo cute n prickley! My daughter is hand rearing 2 baby sugar-gliders atm! They are on 2hour feeds, she keeps them warm in a pouch she wears. I will try and get a picture 🐴

I take Soma, and Xanax. It's the only way I can sleep but I wake up at 2am, 4am and finally 6am. Grateful though that I can still get a little sleep since my husband is asleep in 5 minutes all night long.

For those with pain/leg jumping, etc. Try soaking in as hot of water as you can stand for at least 20 minutes with a mix of Epsom salts, baking soda and essential oils even if in the middle of the night. Even muscle relaxants and pain meds sometimes won't help when this will. 20 minutes or more. This allows for detoxing and puts magnesium back into your system. Low magnesium/vitamin D are often partial culprits for fibro/restless leg pain. Make sure you drink plenty of water after, just as with after a massage. The bath also detoxes. I massage with an electric handheld massager prior to the bath to help loosen the muscles prior to soaking.....

It's horrible when you can not sleep. Over the last few weeks I have been up and down all night it's so annoying because I know it will have a knock on effect the next day. I find a hot water bottle or the herbal pillows you can put in the microwave help a little. I am on a high dose of morphine and muscle relaxant tablets but sometimes you just can not settle. Hope things get better for you x

If i'm in pain, specially on my knees and feets, i massage myself with a hot and cold ointment mix with vick vaporub if its cold, i usually put on socks. Also i pit 1 or 2 pillows under my knees. Today i found an app with beach sounds, you know, waves crashing, wich i absolutly love and find very very relaxing.

Try sleeping on a recliner Chair I did that for 2-3 months as that was the best way to get same rest for 2-4 hour if you were lucky.

After 15 yrs of FM insomnia I have a new GP that put me on Gabapentin. I take 1200mg with dinner and it helps immeasurably. A literal godsend !! Some nights if I still can't sleep I put on previously viewed episodes of shows like Greys Anatomy. The familiar voices of the show distract my flitting mind but since I've watched it several times it doesn't Peak my interest. I have program on my phone called Twilight that dims screen and tints it red on a timer to reduce brain stimulation. I play solitaire games on phone to distract my brain. I also take comfort snuggling with my DH and cat or dog 😊
