Having unusual symptoms in both hands. 1) Both thumbs & index fingers are swollen, red and warm...tender to touch joints. 2)The other fingers are stiff, cold and much whiter than normal. (Pale blue nail beds). 3) Developed stinging & burning in the outer three fingers from mid-palm to tips, and there's almost a strange semi-numbness. If it were all one or the other it'd be logical. Oh wait, none of us do logical! Lol 😏 Anyone have any ideas?
FlappsyLady, it sounds to me like Reynaude's Syndrome. Google it and see just how much more of it matches your symptoms. I'm dealing with Brain Fog and extreme exhaustion today and don't want to give you the wrong info. Definitely check with the doctor, I'll be praying for you.
I just finished reading about Raynaud's and it does seem highly possible, especially since they finally accepted the 4th positive blood test as Sjogrens diagnosis. What I don't understand is how 2 fingers had symptoms more like rheumatoid arthritis (I looked that up too), yet the other 3 fingers matched the Raynaud's, stinging & all, both hands. Thanks to you all!
Flappsy I have been having problems with my hands and fingers also. Only mine is just achie, and the first joints on all my fingers are tender to touch, today my left foot went to bothering me aching and pain in toes then my toes started drawing downwards just the one next to big OTE and the last two on foot.bottom of foot is burning ? Yours sounds more serious though.might call your Dr in morning and talk him.
Sure sounds like a blood flow problem of some sort. Reynodes sounds very possible and so does a disk issue. Funny hoe circulation can cause cold obvious lack of blood flow in one area and swelling, heat seeming back up or blockage in another. Glad your doc doesn't feel it's an immediate problem...I gues. Hope it resolves soon for you. So unfair when these things keep piling on.
Thanks for your input Lill & Lymie. Since that episode it hasn't reoccurred like that. I'm guessing that because the weather was colder then it was likely Raynaud's, and possibly arthritis too. I've had random joints on my hands swell and become painful, but it never involves the whole hand(s) and doesn't last more than 2 days each time.
I've been reading up on sjogrens, since the rheumy doc told me there are some serious complications that can occur. Neuropathy type pains and tingling is one of them. I hope Mayo clinic can get the answers for the hand/body tremors and maybe the neuropathy too. But because I'm getting weaker & off balanced I've actually wondered if I need PT/OT like Lill suggested. Thanks to everyone for your input & suggestions... Much appreciated! 🙏🌼
My GP always said carpal tunnel or arthritis, but what you're describing kind of sounds like CRPS/RSD, especially since it's concentrated in the limbs. Peripheral neuropathy is another name my neurologist gave to hand pain.
I had surgery for carpal tunnel on my right hand in 2005. Those symptoms seemed different somehow. I had pain before the surgery but no tingling & numbness. They diagnosed it by an EMG. Still I guess it's possible it could be. The scar healed really tight and the doc gave me OT and said for me to stretch & massage daily until it broke up and loosened. It never completely loosened. He mentioned having to go back in but with everything going on it got put on the back burner.
No Lill, I'm not having any therapy because they aren't sure what's causing it. But I sent my neurologist a detailed letter, telling him what all has been going on, on the off chance he wants me to come in before mayo clinic calls with an appointment.
Weezie, thanks. Every whisper of prayer counts. Hope y'all have a good night's rest. 🙏🌼
Hey Lill, they're better than last week for sure. When I'm at rest the tremors are barely noticed. But when I use them (eating, drying hair, brushing the dog, holding a pen or cup, etc) the tremor a out more. My shoulders and thighs feel like a heavy rubber tire. The Neuro docs nurse yesterday and said he had read my detailed email and thinks it's best to stay on the tizanidine, and just wait for Mayo to call with an appt. Thanks for asking. Hope you are doing well today! 🙏🌼
That s weird, I am not questioning you but it is like your body is contradicting itself, on on one hand you say you have redness and swelling which shows inflammation and a rush of red blood cells and good circulation. That would no doubt put An increased temp in those fingers, but on the other hAnd the other parts show a lack of reach of red blood cells and circulation with the fact that you have coldness and bluish fingertips in those fingers. I am sorry to hear you are going through this. I hope you get better real soon. My medical curiosity would really like to see what that looks like. It sounds like your hand is bipolar.
Flappsy I hope your hands are getting better. I bought some of these gloves from Bed Bath and Beyond they are called Copper Hands, they claim to help with Arthritis in the hands,I have been sleeping in mine, my hands usually are cold and stiff and hurt every morning. I have noticed that the pain from being cold is gone, they are still stiff. I need to get another pair so I can wear all the time. I don't know if they would help with the problems that you are having.
Profiler that's funny, bipolar hands! I haven't had the bluish & cold feelings hands and feet since the weather warmed up. But that day I was shifting on the exam table with my legs dangling. My toes on the right foot had a short of bluish things while the whole lower leg was red and splotchy looking. The left was too. I'll be glad when all the puzzle pieces fall in place.
Weezie, I have some arthritic gloves but they don't have magnets. My hubby has the magnetic elbow sleeve and wears it daily. I may have to get some of the gloves. But in the summer my fingers don't hurt unless it's extremely hot & humid.
Has anyone had this happen to their hands: Out of nowhere, my fingers on both hands, from the last knuckle to the tips, will begin to throb with excruciating pain. They will feel extremely swollen and the skin will feel numbish. My hands will curl automatically when this happens. Each episode lasts like 10 seconds, and I will get about 3 or 4 at a time. I've had this happen three times in the last couple of months. Each time I've been in bed. The pain is so bad that if they lasted longer is be begging to go to the ER.
Flappsy, that happens to me as well. When I sit, like I am now, with my feet dangling and typing on my laptop, my feet and lower legs will swell and sometimes will get a blue hue on my right toes... My legs are heavy so I think that being bent and my feet under me like that cuts off the circulation. When I sit in my new chair (the one that I paid $2,000.00 for) I can elevate my feet higher and then the swelling goes down and there's no problem. If I stand for a long period of time, my feet and legs will swell also. I do not have high blood pressure or any problems breathing, etc.... It just happens to me. It's been that way for a few years now. I use the gloves with the copper and don't really feel any difference. Maybe I have to get better ones. Hope everyone is having a good day... Profiler, that was really funny.... Bi-Polar Hands.... LOL!!!
The Ortho doc said the discoloration could indicate poor blood flow to & from the get. I've had compression stockings before and hated them. I probably should order the bigger size. But talk about making me feel old! 🙏🌼
Flappy, seriously look up crps, discoloration and swelling are some obvious symptoms, and it could be the circulation issues. It spreads too, and I'd be careful with the Tylenol, it can contribute to further complications of crps.
I understand about the stockings making you feel old. Actually, I feel old alot, especially when my pain levels are up and I haven't slept. That is when things really get wonky. i am typing here today and believe it or not, I am typing words correctly and yet backing up and retyping words that I didn't mess up. It's pitch dark in my room so I can't see the keys even if I wanted to. Thank God, I did alot of typing while I was working so that I can do it without having to actually SEE the keyboard.
So last night my hubby and i were watching tv, and i realized i hadn't had any tremors all day long. And today, even after setting my hair (which usually sets it off) I'm still not having tremors. I notice mild twitching or jerking of random fingers on & off. I started the Plaquenil for sjogrens last Wednesday. Is this just a very odd coincidence or what? 🙏🌼
Flappsy, what absolutely GREAT news!!! I couldn't be happier to hear that the Meds are helping and that the tremors are extremely better or just completely non existent. I will pray that the tremors stay away.. You've had enough to deal with and it really makes my heart sing to hear this news from you, my friend. As always, you're in my thoughts and prayers!! 💕🙏🏻🌺
Sadly AlwayZ, it didn't last. I had to drive late yesterday afternoon. On my way home a lady pulled out in front of four lane traffic (2 each way), and I was in the left lane. As my brain was screaming "she's not going to make it, & you're going to hit her," my foot was slammed down on the brakes to try and stop, and both hands had a death grip on the steering wheel & horn. I felt my rear end fish tailing so I fought to keep in my lane, because the right lane was filled and I had nowhere to go. I was praying, "Lord please don't let me hit her!" I managed to stop, 3-6 inches from her back left fender... And she cursed me out! I looked at her and screamed, "you idiot! if I'd hit you it would have been your stupid fault!"
I was so upset I developed an immediate headache and kept it three hours. I noticed my whole right hand, arm, & shoulder was tensed up... And shaking tremors! When my hubby got home and I told him about it he said, "you should have let her hold it.". I replied, " if I had I would be the one physically hurting because the cars behind me would have hit me too! Besides that I already have spine issues that need surgery, but doctors won't do it because I'm too high a risk. " Then I told him I think I needed new tires because I'm pretty sure mine were bald from leaving black marks on the road. Lol
The tremors were back today, anytime I held anything in my hand. I still think it's from my neck. Oh well it was nice while it lasted. 🙏🌼
The headache from that day is gone AlwayZ. I'm still having the daily mild to moderate headaches at the base of my skull. I was hoping to get more ESI's at the pain clinic, but he said not until after Mayo. 😔 But at least the headaches aren't as severe as in 2012-2013! 🙏🌼
Thanks AlwayZ & Weezie! I'm very thankful too that my car stopped in time. Today has started real bad. My tremors in the right arm & hand were present when we got up at 8am. We went grocery shopping and it's worsened from driving the motorized cart. Good thing I didn't drive the car! As I was getting in the car two women were talking to a small child and said, "she must not feel good. She was trembling." I know the child must have seen the tremors and asked about it. Many people were looking, because it's the worst it's ever between since I went to the ER and they put me on tizanidine. After we got home I noticed I'm also walking funny again, as if my legs are rubber. I won't be exercising today for sure. I'm sure it will improve in a day or two, but when it's like this it ends up causing muscle spasms all the way to my neck. And I've got sharp shooting pain from my life back to the bottom of my right foot. I sure wish Mayo would carpool with the appt! 🙏🌼😞
Flappsy you probably need to go to the ER it may have hurt you in some way if everything is worsening. I don't think you need to wait to see your Dr on Monday. Sending you lots of hugs wish we lived close together.
Weezie & Amanda, thank you. If it worsens overnight I will be there in the morning. I took a muscle relaxer, which made me take a nap. Since I woke up my legs don't feel as shaky. My hands the same, no more or less tremors. It's so bad it's caused all the muscles of my forearm to swell with spasms, hence the muscle relaxers. I also had my hubby run voltaren gel in it.
It's my hubby's birthday, and we had his mom for dinner, then he took her back to the care home. She kept repeating herself. She can't tell her right from her left. And because she's now blind she no longer walks right. She shuffles each foot forward about 1-2" each. We're afraid she's going to trip and fall. But she is using her blind cane I bought her last month.
Then my dad who has Alzheimer's, called worried because he couldn't reach me by phone and he swears my daughter left him a message to call her. He said he tried & couldn't get her, so he called my hubby's phone. He was worried I was in the hospital. I'm so emotionally drained right now that I just can't deal with the ER tonight. Just keep me in your prayers. I'm getting ready to turn in early. I hope everyone has a peaceful night's sleep, as painless as possible, and happy fathers day! 🙏🌼
I wrapped my elbow and forearm with an icepack last night. All the spasms & swelling are gone this morning. I'm still having the daily normal tremors but they're mild. I'm hoping & praying they don't worsen again. 🙏🌼
