I can't get my new pain Dr to understand that extended release pain meds don't work for me. He tried me on methadone, then went to Hydrmorphone. I don't want these heavy duty meds. I just need something to ease the pain. My old Dr had me on oxycodone and it worked quite well. I need to be able to let him know this without "telling" him. He is kind of a jerk. He is the only one left in town who takes Medicaid though.
Does he have you on breakthrough meds? Usually they want you in a maintenance medication but when they start out the medications. They start it out at the very lowest dose and go up from there. But you should defintely ask about breakthrough medication if you don't already have it.
I'm sorry your doctor is kind of a jerk. Hope long have you been seeing him? Maybe he's just a little standoffish.. Pain doctors an to be like that before they get to know you really well. At laat that's been my experience and just my presumption.
I've seen him once. I was in the middle of a relapse and I was in so much pain and my muscles wouldn't quit spasming. I couldn't walk or anything. No breakthrough meds or anything. Just the one pill a day. He says if the one pill doesn't work, narcotics won't work for me. Now, I don't know about anyone else, but I've been on pain meds since 1987, so yes, they work, only they have to be prescribed the correct way. He spoke to me all of 5 min at my first appointment. I didn't like that to begin with. Drs don't like patients who try to talk to them on their level so I try not to do that, but what do you do with knowledge of 20+ yrs in narcotics and how they affect your body? I'm the kind of person who takes control of her own healthcare because I'm the only advocate I have. No one else is going to do it for me.
Cearea I have been on narcotics since 2001 when I hurt my back. I have taken a lot of different ones. I have been on Hydrocodn / Acetaminophen 7.5 / 325 since 2005 when I had my anteriordiskectomy the surgeon had me on 1 every 4 hrs as needed for pain, in 2010 they stopped working and the my PCP put me on 2 every 6 hrs as needed for pain. Two years ago they only worked for 3 hrs but I didn't ask for something stronger until 8 months ago. He put me on Fentonyl Patch 50 mg change every 3 days, I use the Hyrocodone / Acetaminophen for break thru pain. I have fatty liver disease and I worry about liver cancer, I had Hepatitis B in 1979. It was such a light case I never knew I had had it until I was tested so that I could take the vaccine, it came back positive I argued with the Dr when he told me I had had Hepatitis B. I told him I had never had it and he told me that it could have been such a light case I never showed any symptoms for it. I try not to take it very often unless I am hurting really bad. I digress I would ask him for something for break thru pain as Kitty 26 suggested. Good luck
I'm going to. I have a problem with Drs who treat me like a drug addict after speaking with me for 5 whole min. I tend to treat them with the disdain they deserve. I went into medicine because I had a genuine interest in taking care of people. I've only met one Dr. in the last 10 yrs that had that same need to care for people. This one, he is in it for the money.
I understand where you are going through with your dr. I have been treated like a drug addicts when I have had to go to the ER. It is so frustrating, to be treated like that. Thenlast n time I had to go to the ER I told him up front that I am not here for more pain medication I have plenty at home, and then I tell them what I are there for. The last time I was so shocked that the Dr actually believed me.
I just went to the county hospital last time. I had never been there so they had no reference for me. I didn't ask for meds, they offered them. They could tell how much pain I was in by my blood pressure and the fact that it came back to normal after my pain was controlled a bit better. I refuse to go back to the for profit hospital close to my house anymore. I'm tired of being labeled a drug addict.
Cearea, I am sorry that you are having so many problems with your pain medicine. I do think that your doctor is a jerk. I don't think he is giving you pain medicine the right way. Most doctors who treat pain and I have been to at least 4 doctors over the same issue with my pain because of moving. They have treated me with a extended release pain medication and a immediate release one. I think the ER pain medication doesn't work because maybe it doesn't cover you all day. And if it does, maybe you would be in worse pain if you were off it. But the immediate release one is necessary.
I don't know how far away you are from another doctor who can treat your pain but I would look into it. Bring in your Emergency Room Record, other records, and find an internal medicine doctor who can help you. He may have to send you to a pain doctor to back up what he prescribes you but you may get the help you need. My doctor because I live a distance away writes me scripts for 3 months. Maybe that is something that eventually can happen for you. I just think you need something else. You sound like you are going through too much than a person should take. I am sorry about that. I hope things get better. My best wishes for you and I hope tommorow is a better day.
Cearea, I'm sorry the doc isn't working out. Maybe you should just simply stated that your old doc has you on "A" and these drugs he's giving you seem much stronger. Then ask if there's something less strong he can give you. That way you're not specifying a specific drug and you leave the decision up to him. If he chooses to keep it the same, ask him to explain why he thinks something as strong is better. And explain how it makes you dysfunctional. Good luck! You're in my prayers! 🙏🌼
