working in pain

Feb 10, 2015 7:01 PM

I have a full time job that previously required me to stand for at least 8hrs a day. I'm usually allowed to sit at some points but now another employee has caused a problem and made me need a doctors note. As most if us know it easier said then done getting a note for something not diagnosed officially yet. I need some ways to manage pain throughout my day.

Can you bring a little stool to rest one foot on it while standing and alternate. Sometimes that takes the pressure of part of your back. Or a folding chair where you can kneel or place one knee on it at a time. I do that sometimes when I'm going to stand in kitchen cooking longer than what my back wants. A tens unit? Kinesiology tape to your back? But a doctors. One is not a terrible idea if you have a dr can respects you. You aren't asking for him/her to put out out of work, you are asking for a note that will legitimize an accommodation to allow you to fulfill your 8 hr day. It is against the law to discriminate against a handicapped person remember that. And continues non relenting pain can be considered a handicap in my book.

Also, when I was still working, I would bring ice packs, hot packs, what ever it took to apply whenever the situation allowed itself. On my break I would lay on the floor on a yoga mat to stretch out. Sometimes a little creativity can help. I hope something I mentioned can help you!

I could only suggest things like creams or heat packs, little rests throughout the day and try to keep your mind off it. Gosh, there's some people that just won't understand, they always make it difficult for you..that employee needs to stay out of it.
Stay strong, you should be proud working especially with this pain!

Oh darlin I'm sorry they are so hard about it. My work is similar. They have seen me after being in and out of surgery and I have talked to my LOD about my issues just a bit and if you just be honest, take a breath and hopefully bring a note then they should understand. I'm sorry they are tough. I hope the best and wish they allow you to aid yourself. You know your body the best, so do what you feels best 💖

Lucky- I use lots of salve. It at least makes it feel a bit better for awhile. Also, I think there is some kind Of foot wrap for people to use on their foot/ankle. Also make sure your wearing good shoes. Can you go to some more doctors no find out what's going on for you? Hang in there gal!

Lucky13, Jesswoo & the rest are on to something, about comfortable shoes. Get your doctor, preferably a podiatrist or orthopedist to write a "order" to you employer, stating due to your physical issues, you must wear orthotically support shoes , sit/stand so much every hour, etc.

I've been wearing braces and taking meds to balance with the pain since I haven't had a chance to talk to the manager yet. The weather is warming up here so I've been feeling better just hope it stays that way. Thanks for all the suggestions :)
